Jimmy Puah says SPAD’s deregulation of school bus fares will put a heavier burden on the people.
JOHOR BARU: PKR Johor Legal Bureau Chief Jimmy Puah says SPAD’s decision to deregulate the school bus fare structure from next year was akin to taking the easy way out.
Saying “SPAD should not run away from the problem”, Puah accused the commission of “defeating the very purpose of its existence.”
The State Assemblyman for Bukit Batu also said leaving the school bus fare structure in the hands of individual bus operators and parents would leave the latter at the losing end.
He explained, “By leaving it to the parties to negotiate, I fear the reality and lack of alternative transport would mean the bargaining table is heavily tilted against the parents.”
Expressing his disappointment further, Puah said the public expected the commission to “perform its role dutifully” by devising a fair structure that benefitted both parties especially in view of the recent fuel hike.
He explained that SPAD’s decision to deregulate fare structures at this point was exacerbating the situation for parents of school-going kids.
Calling for the resignation of SPAD’s chairman since he was “reluctant to perform his duties”, Puah also suggested the government dissolve SPAD and return the commission’s function to the Transport Ministry.
