TOO LITTLE TOO LATE: IGP warns would-be jihadists from joining IS militants
KUALA LUMPUR - Police warned that aspiring Malaysian jihadists, who intend to join Islamic State (IS) militants to fight its cause in Syria, will face the full brunt of the law if they go ahead with their plans.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today police have the identities of Malaysians planning to leave for Syria to join IS and are on the lookout for them at exit points in the country.
"With our investigations and intelligence gathering, we know who they are and we will not hesitate to arrest them when they try to depart. Whether they try to use a third country or take several transit flights, we will detain them.
"We are working with Interpol to thwart the participation of Malaysians in the Syrian civil war," he said.
When asked how many Malaysians who planned to join IS militants had police identified, Khalid declined to disclose a figure.
He said those held will be investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).
About two weeks ago, three Malaysian men were held at the KL International Airport minutes before they departed for Istanbul and subsequently to Syria to join IS as militants.
About 50 Malaysians including a doctor, teacher and other professionals, are said to be among those who managed to enter Syria early this year.
They are actively serving IS as fighters or were given non-combat tasks.
Three Malaysians, including a former PAS leader, have been killed in battle to date.
Khalid was met by the media at a function where former Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani assumed duties as the first director of the new federal police Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department while Datuk Muhammad Fuad Abu Zarim was appointed the new federal Internal Security and Public Order director. Both will carry the rank of commissioner. -Sundaily
