Dr M didn’t have to deal with Internet mess, says Najib

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad thinks the current administration is in a "bigger mess" because of the flow of information on the Internet, something which the former prime minister never had to deal with, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.
Turning to his blog, www.najibrazak.com, to respond to criticism again, Najib said Dr Mahathir had been "taken in" by the democratisation of information on social media and as such, thought things were worse today.
The prime minister said Dr Mahathir was also "echoing" the opposition's lies and slander, which he said have been amplified through the Internet.
"Any controversy that arose over his or his government's actions would take days if not weeks to develop.
"Tun did not have to face allegations that are recycled over and over and shared at lightning speed. The word 'viral' was almost non-existent during his administration," Najib said.
"Today, online media with hidden agendas spin headlines and upload bold-faced lies that get shared and spread by the minute, and which perpetuates the perception that they must be true.
"Just because a lie is spread a thousand times does not make it true. With such an onslaught online, it's not surprising Tun thinks there is a bigger 'mess' today."
Najib added that the perception that things under his administration were worse was only Dr Mahathir's personal opinion and accused the former prime minister of ignoring successes achieved under Putrajaya's transformation programmes for the economy and country.
If Dr Mahathir thought things now were messy, it was only because of his criticism and because he listened to the opposition's claims, Najib said.
“The 'mess' that Tun refers to, is largely of his own making as a result of his attacks and his echoing of the opposition's lies and slander.”
Najib's blog post today comes after his no-show last Friday at a dialogue on 1Malaysia Development Bhd. He did not attend the event on police advice of a security threat.
Dr Mahathir, however, turned up and gave a speech in Najib's absence, before police stopped him.
Najib's failure to attend the dialogue has been severely criticised, more so since he had just described himself as a warrior who would fight for his job.
