Hundreds have started to gather outside Istana Serene in Johor Bahru in support of the royalty.
People gradually trickled into the compound outside the palace's gate.
They are mostly represented by NGO groups such as Ikram, Perkasa and temple groups. The crowd is visibly multi-racial.
The rally which started at 4pm was in response to Culture and Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz who criticised Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Nazri had warned the prince against interfering in politics or be prepared to be "whacked" after Tunku Ismail mocked Najib for failing to turn up at a 1MDB dialogue earlier this month.
The crowd brought together with them banners which read "Daulat Tuanku" as they chanted the same.
