The Dewan Ulama representative told delegates at the 61st PAS muktamar today that DAP had hurt PAS many times, with its decision to cut ties with PAS in Sabah and Sarawak, and later with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“DAP slapped us across our right cheek, and we said, ‘Don’t, it stings’. Then they slapped us across our left cheek, and we said, ‘Don’t, it stings’.
“Now we slap them once, and finally they realise being slapped stings!” said Nasruddin, to roars of approval from the packed hall at the Stadium Tertutup Kuala Selangor.
He warned DAP not to challenge the Islamist party’s patience, nor underestimate the ulama faction.
“We may be dressed in jubah (robes) and turbans, but you must remember that underneath this jubah, there are elbows and knees that can be used (against you).”
On Wednesday, PAS’s Dewan Ulama passed a motion to cut ties with DAP, yet remain in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition.
The emergency motion was agreed to by almost all 644 delegates at the Dewan Ulama assembly in Gombak.
The motion was first tabled by Dewan Ulama central committee member Mokhtar Senik, who said DAP’s actions had crossed the limits of acceptable behaviour.
Nasruddin said today many journalists had asked him how PAS could remain in PR if it stopped cooperating with DAP.
He said this was possible, and pointed to DAP, which had ended all ties with PR allies in east Malaysia, yet remained with the coalition in peninsular Malaysia.
“Look at DAP. It cut ties with Pakatan Rakyat in Sabah and Sarawak, but DAP in peninsular Malaysia is still with Pakatan Rakyat.
"DAP cut ties with the PAS president, but wants to remain with PAS.
“So is what we did wrong?”
Nasruddin added that PAS had tried to reproach DAP “nicely” for “hurting” the Islamist party before coming to this decision, but their efforts had apparently been fruitless.
However, Hadi told reporters the Dewan Ulama’s motion was not the party’s official decision, adding that it had to be passed to the Shura Council, the powerful decision-making body of clerics, for further discussion.
