Clothes do not make the man, says Bar Council

Steven Thiru urges government officials to trust Malaysians' sense of decency

KUALA LUMPUR: Bar Council president Steven Thiru upended the old proverb “Clothes make the man” today in urging Malaysian government officials not to gauge moral standing by a person’s attire.
In a statement this evening about renewed instances of members of the public being denied entry to government premises because of dress code violations, Thiru said government officials should not impose arbitrary or burdensome barriers on citizens in the form of clothing or moral policing.
“Ultimately, a person’s attire is not a measure of the person’s moral standing,” he said. “A nation is not judged by the clothes that its people wears but by the heart that its people has.”
He lauded the Cabinet’s sensible approach in recently announcing that no dress code was necessary for members of the public who require only counter service at government departments or agencies.
However, he pointed out that there had been recent incidents of women being turned away because of exposed knees and arms.
He said such dress codes were unacceptable and out of step with ordinary Malaysian’s way of life. Such a dress code, denying access to government premises or services amounted to an abuse of power, violated people’s right and their freedom of movement and expression.
