Local authorities need to look into the problem of lack of sanitation workers on public holidays
KUALA LUMPUR: Rubbish is piling up in public areas on public holidays because city workers are on leave, a problem that local authorities will need to take up in future.
Y.Ghandi, 34, a security guard based outside Pasar Seni said he had to look for workers of Alam Flora, the sanitation contractor, and staff of Kuala Lumpur City Hall yesterday to request them to dispose of the rubbish that had piled up in the area.
“There are too few Alam Flora and DBKL personnel around because most do not work during public holidays,” he said.
He certainly has a valid reason for being concerned about thrash.
“I was once scolded by tourists from Singapore because the thrash bins were full and rubbish was spilling out,” he said.
Taxi driver Mohd Shahrul Hassan, 45, said foreign workers who usually gather in large groups at public places such as bus terminals and walkways during the holidays also contributed to unsightly litter.
“They not only cause congestion in the areas. They also throw litter indiscriminately.
“The local authority must take some action, like impose a fine or jail, to teach the culprits. The local authority shouldn’t act only when there is a public complaint,” he said.
