Shahbudin: Mere denials won’t wish new expose away

The onus is on the Prime Minister to come forward with explanations accompanied by proof that he was speaking the truth.

KUALA LUMPUR: The latest expose in the Wall Street Journal and also The Sarawak Report on nearly USD700 million ending up in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal banking account was not only a new blow to him but the most serious allegations leveled so far against him. He will have an extremely tough time in denying them or explaining anything.
A political analyst in making the case in his latest blog posting thinks that the latest expose cannot be simply dismissed as the previous ones given the seriousness of the allegations which affect Najib personally.
“Is it all wrong or simply slander? Bare denials won’t wish allegations away.”
Since the allegations have been leveled at Najib, added Shahbudin Husin, then the onus is on him to come forward with explanations accompanied by proof that he was speaking the truth. “He has no choice as a brave Bugis warrior but to come forward with proof or documents to show that he has never received the funds alleged to have gone into his personal banking account.”
“He has to show his bank account number and prove that the bank account number mentioned in the allegations don’t belong to him.”
The analyst said that this must be followed by legal action against WSJ and The Sarawak Report on the grounds that their reporting was false, not true and slander.
“If all these actions are not taken, danger stalks and Najib’s future is fraught with difficulties,” said Shahbudin. “The public perception would be that he has broken the trust as a leader.”
“It’s not only dangerous for his position in this world but also in the afterlife.”
Shahbudin noted that 1MDB was quick to deny channeling any funds into Najib’s personal kitty.
“Looking at the nature of the allegations and the manner in which it has been laid out, denials from 1MDB alone won’t do,” said Shahbudin. “Anyone can issue a statement with a bare denial to dismiss any allegation as irresponsible. It means nothing.”
Najib had been feeling rather comfortable with the 1MDB situation of late, noted Shahbudin. He felt confident enough to postpone the Umno elections by 18 months from its schedule date in 2016 i.e. until a new date after the 2018 General Election.
Interestingly, noted the analyst, Najib had coincidentally been reminding the faithful that religion prohibits the faithful against slander, pitting people against each other, destroying the solidarity of the people, and betraying the trust of the people. “All these must be avoided and rejected in order to enter paradise.”
The analyst was taking a dig at Najib who had been carrying on in recent days somewhat like an ustaz. “He has been reminding the faithful that they would not enter paradise although they pray, if at the same time, they pit people against each other, slander and wreck their solidarity.”
Najib, he noted, even went onto quote from a Hadith on the practices that will bring the faithful in Islam to paradise viz. maintain relationships, observe the prayers, give out zakat in charity, and forge the bonds of brotherhood.
No doubt the faithful would feel proud and appreciate the reminder as it shows how healthy is the thinking of the number one leader in the country, agreed Shahbudin. “But the proof of the pudding is in the eating.”
“Action speaks louder than words.”
