WHAT SECESSION? Rally did not urge S'wak to leave M'sia - organiser
KUCHING - The '722 Sarawak Freedom And Independent Walk' gathering today stressed that it did not seek to have Sarawak secede from Malaysia.
Its organising chairman, Peter John Jaban, said the gathering did not at all touch on urging Sarawak to leave Malaysia.
The gathering was organised by the Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) and the Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) Movement.
When asked by reporters whether the organisation of the gathering was akin to instigating the people of Sarawak to get the state to secede from Malaysia, Jaban said his side had never raised such a sentiment.
"Sarawak leave Malaysia? As far as I know here (at the gathering) we did not say so at all. We did not say we want Sarawak to leave Malaysia; anybody can say that. We cannot stop people from talking, but we never said anything of the sort," he told reporters after the gathering.
The gathering at the Song Kheng Hai Recreation Park went ahead despite the police advising against it for security reasons.
Jaban said the rally was held because the organisers were of the opinion that the police did not oppose it but only issued a warning.
He said the gathering was held in view of the anniversary of Sarawak's independence from the British and to voice demands on the issues of education, health and oil royalty.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has ordered the arrest and investigation of a Twitter user who called for the secession of Sarawak from Malaysia.
Khalid, who gave the order via his Twitter account @KBAB51, tagged the police department and asked that the user "Republic of Sarawak" who tweets via the handle @Swakheadhunter, be detained under the Sedition Act.
@Swakheadhunter had tweeted: "Secession is not up to you Malayans to decide. It is up to us Sarawakians", and had tagged Khalid as well.
Khalid had earlier advised the organisers to call off the gathering, citing reasons of security and public order. - Sundaily
