A-G should not take long to decide on SRC, RM2.6 billion donation, says Dr Mahathir

It should not take long for the attorney-general (A-G) to decide on the outcome of the probe into the RM2.6 billion donation and SRC International Sdn Bhd after the files were sent back to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further investigation, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his trademark sarcasm.
"It's not so tall but a few hundred sheets tall, not as tall as the A-G. So he wouldn't take that long to study them," he said, referring to Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali's statement earlier that he needed time to go through the investigation papers.
Apandi was quoted as saying that, "I'm studying and you must bear in mind they have collected evidence from more than 100 witnesses, it's not one file, it's as high as me."
The anti-graft agency had submitted the investigation papers to Apandi on December 31 last year, which included seeking assistance from the A-G's Chambers to obtain documents and statements from overseas witnesses.
Dr Mahathir in an interview with Free Malaysia Today said Apandi would ignore the MACC report and that nothing conclusive would come from the investigations.
Apandi immediately responded to Dr Mahathir and declared he would act without fear or favour in deciding the matter.
"But (now) I think he (Apandi) is very careful about studying the papers, so it will take quite a long time before he decides what to do," Dr Mahathir said, according to reports.
Najib has denied any wrongdoing in both cases.
On another matter, Dr Mahathir said he had cautioned Putrajaya that it could be in trouble if it continued to spend beyond its means.
"When you have less money, live within your means. If you live beyond your means, you will be in trouble," added Dr Mahathir who once doubled up as finance minister during his tenure as prime minister.
Dr Mahathir said this when asked for his response on what he would do if he was still the prime minister today, in view of the current challenging economic times.
"I have replied to this question before. If I were the prime minister now, I will resign.
"There are a lot of things to be done now but it would depend on many things," said Dr Mahathir, who is also Proton chairman.
The 90-year-old had earlier witnessed the first firing of Proton's latest range of engines via live teleconferencing from the testing facilities in England.
Last week, at another Proton event, the news site reported that Dr Mahathir had voiced his rare support for Najib's move to review Budget 2016, which the prime minister was expected to announce on January 28.
Dr Mahathir, however, said that further revisions might be needed to be made to the budget because the price of crude oil in the international market had dipped below US$30 (RM132) per barrel.
"So maybe now (Najib will) need to review (the budget) because the price is going down," said Dr Mahathir, who cautioned that Malaysians must be ready to face a very difficult economic environment.
"There are a lot of things that we need to look at if we are to continue our development."
