Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) central committee member Khairul Nizam Abd Ghani has been detained for the second time after being held under the Sedition Act last week.
PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said police from the Kota Baru district police headquarters arrested Khairul at his home in Kota Baru around 10 this morning.
Khairul’s handphone and laptop were also confiscated by police, he said.
Police, however, have yet to explain why Khairul was detained for the second time.
Denouncing the move, Sivarajan pointed out how Khairul had been cooperative with police investigations thus far.
“Detaining a person for a number of times for the same offence is unlawful,” he said.
“We urge police to release Khairul immediately and to be professional. Charge him in court if he has gone against the law.”
Khairul was detained on Monday last week for criticising the arrest of fellow PSM activist Khalid Ismath that was made similarly under the Sedition Act.
Apart from being detained under the Sedition Act, Khairul was also detained under the Communications and Multimedia Act as soon as he arrived to give his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
He was, however, released the next day after the magistrate rejected a remand application by the police. -Mkini
