Putrajaya must consult rulers for TPPA, says Malay chambers

The Malay Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DPMM) wants Putrajaya to refer to the Conference of Rulers before agreeing to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA)
DPMM president Syed Ali Alattas said this is necessary as the TPPA will affect the country's sovereignty.
He also expressed pessimism that Parliament will be able to address the issue, leaving the rulers as the last stand.
"This concerns the country's sovereignty but Parliament is expected to be blocked and restricted.
"I would like to ask, have the Malay rulers been referred to for their advice?
"This has serious implications on the rakyat and country and therefore advice from the Conference of Rulers should be sought," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
The TPPA will be debated in a special Parliament sitting slated for Jan 26 and 27.
It is expected to pass without major objections due to the ruling coalition's superior majority which, by convention, complies with the party whip's instructions on how to vote.
Syed Ali said DPMM is also planning to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to express the organisation's opposition to the TPPA.
He added that the memorandum will also be submitted to MPs before the special sitting. -Mkini
