Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak disclosed that the government has ordered security to be stepped up amid threats of terror attacks on Malaysian soil.
"The government has instructed security agencies to step up efforts to deal with possible terror threats in the country following a number of terrorist attacks in the world's major cities," Najib said in a blog posting today.
However, the prime minister urged the people against speculation that might cause panic.
"We should not make speculations or spread information that may cause public worry about the country's actual security level," he said.
Najib also mentioned the recently passed National Security Council (NSC) Bill, which will grant him sweeping powers in combatting terror threats.
"We have agreed to implement certain measures to stop and foil any terrorist efforts to threaten the peace and harmony in this country.
"This includes the government's decision to pass the NSC Bill 2015, which will allow the government to act effectively in dealing with any terror incident in the country," he said.
The prime minister added that the country must stand united in the face of threats from terrorists.
"I am confident and believe that every rakyat who loves peace and harmony will stand together in the government's effort to deal with terror threats," he said.
Najib said he would chair the NSC meeting tomorrow to discuss the security measures that have been undertaken and also the latest development including the terror attack in Jakarta last week.
Malaysia has been placed on the highest alert level since the Jakarta incident. -Mkini
