KUALA LUMPUR - A faction in Kedah Umno wants Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir out as mentri besar, but may be forced to seek support from PAS should a vote of no-confidence be put to the test.
Excluding Mukhriz, Umno controls exactly half or 18 out of the 36-seat assembly. Jitra assemblyman Datuk Aminuddin Omar, who is also a state executive councillor, however, is known to be loyal to Mukhriz.
Four other state executive councillors are also believed to be on Mukhriz’s side, according to a Kedah Umno Youth grassroots leader, namely Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Guar Chempedak), Datuk Suraya Yaacob (Sungai Tiang), Datuk Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid (Ayer Hangat) and Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor (Bandar Baharu).
“As far as I know, Bashah’s claims that 100 per cent of Umno ADUNs are with him is incorrect,” Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi, head of Umno Youth’s Bendang Baru branch in Langkawi, told Malay Mail Online last night, referring to Kedah Umno deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
“Note also that most of the ‘ketua bahagian’ are seen supporting Datuk Bashah, such as Datuk Azeez Rahim, Datuk Nawawi [Ahmad] and Datuk Johari Baharom are parliamentarians, not ADUNs. Some are neither in Parliament nor DUN, such as Datuk Rozai Safian.
“So, support from a majority of ‘ketua bahagian’ does not constitute support of the majority of Kedah Umno ADUNs, let alone Kedah Umno, especially at the grassroots level where Mukhriz remains personally very popular!” added the son of Umno veteran Tan Sri Sanusi Junid.
“Ketua bahagian” refers to division leaders, while “ADUN” is the Malay acronym for state assemblyman.
In a press conference in Alor Setar yesterday, Ahmad Bashah announced that Kedah Umno leaders have lost confidence in Mukhriz and urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to change the MB.
Mukhriz responded that his mandate was given by the people, and that they will be the ones to decide if he is to remain in office or not.
If Umno wants the majority of Kedah assemblymen to demonstrate the loss of confidence in Mukhriz, which could be shown in a vote at the legislative assembly or by approaching the state ruler directly as in the cases of Perak and Selangor, the Malay nationalist party would likely have to get support from the two MCA assemblymen and some from PAS that controls nine seats.
Barisan Nasional (BN) controls 21 seats in the Kedah legislative assembly comprising Umno (19) and MCA (2), while PAS has nine, PKR four and the DAP two.
Any cooperation with other parties in the effort to oust Mukhriz would likely involve PAS, given the current close ties between the Islamist party and Umno in the national leadership, rather than PKR or the DAP.
Kedah PAS commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi, however, merely told Malay Mail Online that his party would meet soon to discuss the political developments.
Malay Mail Online was unable to reach Kedah MCA chairman Datuk Lee Chee Leong for comment at the time of writing.
Some observers have likened what’s happening in Kedah now to the 2014 Terengganu MB crisis that saw BN risk becoming a minority government in the state following the temporary resignations from a few Umno assemblymen.
