Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has castigated Umno for attempting to remove Mukhriz Mahathir as Kedah menteri besar due to his father's actions.
"Umno is not only primitive, it's low class," he tweeted.
"You don't remove the son just because you don't like the father," he added.
Zaid also believes the campaign to oust Mukhriz lacked support, and therefore those behind it resorted to running to the media instead.
At a press conference earlier, Kedah Umno deputy chief Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah claimed that the state Umno has lost confidence in Mukhriz's leadership.
He also called for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to intervene and replace Mukhriz as menteri besar.
Prior to the announcement, Bashah held a closed-door meeting with the state's Youth, puteri and Wanita leaders.
The move against Mukhriz comes hot on the heels of his father Dr Mahathir Mohamad's declaration that he would not stop his campaign to oust Najib.
The former premier claimed that the nation is on the decline because of the current administration.
In the past, Mahathir was said to be harbouring the ambition of making his son the prime minister.
Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that Mukhriz left a function he was attending in a rush after learning about the announcement.
The Malay daily said Mukhriz is currently holding a meeting at his office in Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar.
Meanwhile, Sinar Harian reported that the embattled menteri besar would issue a media statement on the crisis later tonight. - Mkini
