SG BESAR POLLS Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad today lamented what he called the Malays' blind support for Umno.
"The Malays now don't weigh their own beliefs.
"They tie themselves to the party. Even if the party does a huge wrong they will continue supporting the party," Mahathir said at a press conference in Sungai Besar today.
He said this after meeting with former Umno Tanjong Karang MP, Shukur Siraj, the father of Sungai Besar Amanah candidate Azhar Shukur.
Mahathir said such blind support for Umno would cause the party to be despised by others.
"Umno is supposed to champion race, religion and country, but now it champions Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak."
Asked if he would accept the results of the Sungai Besar polls if Umno is victorious, the former premier said he will.
However he said this would mean the people are supporting a prime minister he accuses of robbing the country.
"If that's what the people want they'll get what they deserve."
Mahathir is in Sungai Besar today to campaign for Amanah, which he says represents the people in the fight against Najib.
Mahathir believes PAS supporters will also support Amanah.
"They see PAS as no longer representing the Islamic struggle, they're just about their own party their own leader," he said.
Amanah's Azhar is facing against BN candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi and PAS man Dr Rani Osman in a three way that will culminate on June 18.- Mkini
