Wife, who was working as a salesgirl, could no longer tolerate her husband's beatings and escaped to the nearest police station on Feb 4.
KULAI: A security guard was imposed a fine of RM3,000 or three months’ jail today for assaulting and wrongfully confining his wife between May last year and February this year.
Jefrie Mohd Arif, 39, admitted before Magistrate Ahmad Farid Ahmad Kamal to committing the offence on Nor Nazillah Musa, 35, at their house in Taman Senai Baru here.
According to the facts of the case, the victim, who was working as a salesgirl, could no longer tolerate her husband’s beatings and escaped to the nearest police station on Feb 4.
The police managed to track down the husband on June 3 at a house in Bandar Baru Uda.
Pleading for a lighter sentence, Jefrie said he had to support his wife and their four children.
However, the magistrate rejected his mitigation saying a wife should be treated with respect and not in a despicable manner by the husband.
Jefrie’s wife was not present in court but in her victim-impact statement (Section 183A of the Criminal Procedure Code), she hoped for an appropriate sentence “to teach him a lesson”.
“I hope he will change and will look after me properly if I am still with him after this.
“I will also continue working to support myself and our children and probably would seek a divorce through the court on the advice of the Islamic Religious Department and Welfare Department,” she said.
Prosecuting Officer Insp Siti Noriah Jamal@ A. Jalal conducted the case while Jefrie was represented by counsel K Vijayan.
