Najib should stop running away and face the press

YOURSAY | ‘Mr PM, the duty of the press is to report the facts without fear or favour.’
Anonymous 1890491455255851: It is ironic that the PM chooses to talk about balanced reporting at an Utusan Malaysia event, seeing that the government has long controlled media such as this, which have been used to publish what the government deems appropriate.
While there should obviously be responsible reporting, it is hard to see how the media has got it so wrong in the case of 1MDB, in particular all the actions taken by Najib Abdul Razak and his men to allegedly stifle proper investigations.
Add to the fact that investigations by other countries are revealing evidence that supported the reports by certain media agencies, it makes it even harder for anyone to back the PM on this issue.
Yes, it is causing problems for the country but really, who is the source of the bad news? Surely not the media but the men and women who lit the fire.
Cogito Ergo Sum: No, Mr PM. The duty of the press is to report the facts without fear or favour.
It is also inherent on the Fourth Estate to remain faithful to the truth, no matter how painful it is to the government, be it BN or Pakatan Harapan.
CQ Muar: Najib, for once I tend to agree with what you said. But those in fact were the very wrongdoings you had indulged in. Ever since you took over the helm, it was scandal after scandal.
Changes were made to our laws to suit the convenience of the ruling government. Abuse of power became limitless, with corruption beyond control.
While money politics was shunned in the past, it is now a norm. Even press freedom is curbed, save those owned by the Umno-led government. And here you audaciously urge others to be responsible?
If you had been a dedicated and honest leader, the majority of the rakyat wouldn't have criticised and condemned you, Mr PM. Enough of your rhetoric and soliloquy. We ain't no new kid on the block.
RM2.6 Billion Turkey Haram: The media must report the truth, no doubt about it. But when they do, some were arrested. For Najib, he wants the press to write news pleasing to his eyes, never mind if they are false flatteries.
Najib, if new reports about you, especially on allegations that your ‘donation’ comes from 1MDB, are false, you can either sue the media or take questions on 1MDB from the press to prove your innocence.
You did neither, and now you are implying that people are writing false news. Blame it on yourself. And stop running away - face the press just like all world-class leaders do.
Anonymous 2415891461978791: “(The media should) … fulfil the role of assisting the government…," said Najib.
Wrong. The role of the media in a democracy, which Malaysia is ceasing to be, is to:
1. Inform the public what's going on.
2. Uncover abuses.
3. Provoke public debates leading to greater public participation in key decisions.
4. Allow political pluralism to express itself by advertising different views/ideological approaches to issues.
5. Keep politicians attuned to public opinion while offering them a medium to explain policies/decisions to the people and build the necessary support.
6. Alert and mobilise public opinion to humanitarian causes/injustices.
Najib only wants a compliant press, like North Korea, where the media is merely a cheerleader for an authoritarian regime.
Mojo Jojo: Yes, nice try, but only incompetent and corrupt leaders ruin the country, not news reporting that you deem as 'false news'.
Try taking your critics to court, and I mean the US and not Malaysian-variant, if you dare. But dictators won't be dictators if they allowed that to happen.
One Malaysia: Najib, even if you manage to stop ‘false news’ here, the world is well alerted by these ‘false news’.
Investigations in seven different countries into your 1MDB and financial wizardry is surely a record for any prime minister in the world?
Show some guts and sue The Wall Street Journal for reporting ‘false news’ and maybe then, you might regain a little respect.
Negarawan: Does Najib consider himself to be a good judge of the truth? Only a person with a clear conscience is able to recognise what the truth is.
A corrupt leader will always deny the truth, and twist the facts in his favour in order to portray himself as righteous. Najib speaks without a soul, and his words sound hollow to the discerning rakyat.
Worldly Wise: If the PM had behaved himself, there would not have been any problem. The lack of independence and integrity of our journalists has caused much decay in transparency at the top. This reeks laterally and all down the line.

Wong Lu Shin: How about this for a headline: ‘False leaders ruins the country, rakyat reminds Najib’. -Mkini
