Since Mastura Mohd Yazid was named as the BN candidate to defend her late husband’s parliament seat, there has been intense speculation that not all in Umno were in favour of this.
There were also claims that the Umno machinery was not cranking its gears to the maximum, prompting denials from the likes of Wanita Umno chief Sharizat Abdul Jalil.
Commenting on the matter during a special press conference this afternoon, Rafizi Ramli roped in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s wife Rosmah Mansor.
He also noted how Kuala Kangsar Umno division chief Ramly Zahari was reported to have admitted that he was aggrieved, but was not sulking over the decision to field Mastura.
“So it is not easy for Umno to deny the claims that Mastura’s nomination did not receive full support, furthermore she is not a local,” said the PKR secretary-general.
“The next question is - who or which group was responsible for influencing the top leadership to allow her (Mastura) to contest?
“One of the speculations making the rounds among voters, the opposition and Umno machinery is that Mastura received solid backing from Rosmah as the two of them hail from Negeri Sembilan,” he added.
However, the Pandan lawmaker conceded he did not have any further information on this, and therefore wanted to pose the question to the Umno and BN leadership themselves.

“Is it true that Mastura’s candidacy received strong support from Rosmah compared to other potential candidates to the point that it caused displeasure among certain quarters in Umno, especially the grassroots in Kuala Kangsar?” he asked.
On the same note, Rafizi exhorted Mastura to state her stand on the expenditure involving the prime minister’s wife.
“If there is a motion by Pakatan Harapan in Parliament to cut or limit Rosmah’s expenditure with regard to the public coffers, would Mastura, if elected as an MP, support this or otherwise?” he questioned.
The PKR leader also urged Mastura to be fair to all voters and provide a clear stand on this matter.

The Kuala Kangsar seat fell vacant after Mastura’s husband and incumbent MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad was killed in a helicopter crash in Sarawak.
The BN candidate is embroiled in a four-cornered fight with PAS’ Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, Parti Amanah Negara’s Ahmad Termizi Ramli and independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
