Amanah Youth has expressed concern over communications between former defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein and his three special forces escorts.
According to vice-chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin, such communications could have severe implications, and urged the armed forces chief Zulkifli Zainal Abidin to take responsibility over the matter.
“After four months, it is incredible to use ‘overlook’ as an excuse in the case of Hishammuddin’s bodyguards, especially if the armed forces chief allowed this to happen.
“The implication of this incident is severe. Communications between the bodyguards and senior military officers may still be ongoing in the four-month period.
“We don’t know what investigation findings may have leaked over the period,” he said in a statement today.
Shazni said this is an unacceptable oversight that has affected the reputation of the armed forces.
“Hence, we respectfully ask Zulkifli to take full responsibility and resolve the matter immediately,” he said.
Malaysiakini reported on Aug 25 that three special forces personnel – two with the Navy’s special operations force Paskal and one commando – continued to serve as personal escorts to the former defence minister although he was no longer in office.
Hishammuddin later clarified that the three officers were only serving him temporarily, but that he had offered them jobs provided they resigned from the armed forces.
He also expressed willingness to be investigated over the matter after a probe was ordered by his successor in the Defence Ministry, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
It was reported yesterday that the three officers were ordered to report back to the armed forces. - Mkini
