Electoral reform group Bersih is appealing to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to set up a tribunal to investigate the alleged wrongdoings of the Election Commission before and during the recent general election.
Bersih acting chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari said a letter on this was delivered to Mahathir today.
"Bersih is appealing to the prime minister to set up a tribunal to investigate the wrongdoings of seven EC members that led to widespread mismanagement and cheating.
"The members had not only sullied the EC's fairness, independence and integrity but also violated the people's rights to chose a government as well as threatening the foundations of democracy,” he told a press conference at the Parliament building lobby today.
Former EC chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah departed from the commission in July after the government shortened his contract.
Bersih, in its letter to Mahathir, said Pakatan Harapan's victory in the 14th general election was in spite of the EC acting in favour of the outgoing ruling coalition BN.
It listed 10 alleged wrongdoings by the EC, including gerrymandering and malapportionment to favour BN, deliberately holding a mid-week campaign to discourage voter turnout and allowing only a short campaign period of 11 days.
It also claimed the EC had limited voter registration and manipulated the electoral roll, arbitrarily disqualified candidates, manipulated domestic and international election observers as well as failed to act on election offences.
Shahrul Aman urged Mahathir to advise the Yang di Pertuan Agong to set up a tribunal which he said was important to restore confidence in the independence of the EC.
"Even though the EC chief has retired, the six other members are still there.
"They should be held responsible for the wrongdoings in the 14th general election and be removed," he said. -Mkini
