First open bidder of US$250 million Equanimity is… Jamal Yunos

KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos has come forward to announce his bid for the controversial superyacht Equanimity.

Jamal revealed his intention to attain the US$250 million vessel, allegedly owned by fugitive financier Jho Low, through an interview with Watan Online yesterday.

Purportedly bought using misappropriated funds from scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Equanimity is currently docked at the Boustead Cruise Centre in Port Klang after being seized in Bali, Indonesia.

The former fugitive spent 27 days at the Sungai Buloh prison before being granted bail for a slew of criminal charges against him. He was released on July 31.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the government's intention to sell the Equanimity on Aug 11.

He said that the luxury yacht will be sold to the highest bidder as soon as possible, as its maintenance cost amounts to about RM2 million a month.

Dr Mahathir, who inspected the vessel and was amazed by its opulence, said that no date has been set for the auction, but that several parties “have already expressed interest.”

The 91.5-metre superyacht is reportedly capable of carrying 26 guests and features gold leaf and marble trimmings, a spa and sauna, a 20-metre swimming pool, a cinema, an elevator and a helipad. -nst
