MCA's Chee Teong tasked with dethroning DAP in Balakong

MCA has named its Cheras Batu 11 branch Youth chief Tan Chee Teong as the candidate for the upcoming Balakong by-election.
His candidacy was announced by MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Tan will face Serdang DAP Youth chief Wong Siew Ki, in what is being touted as a "battle of grassroots leaders".
For the first time ever, MCA has decided to use its own logo for the Sept 8 by-election instead of the iconic BN scales.
Wee described the move to use the 14-point star flag a "historical moment".
“We will face it together and fight it out in Balakong. We want to make a comeback.”
According to Wee, MCA has informed BN component parties and other parties "friendly" to the coalition, about the move to field Tan in Balakong.
“We want to tell everyone, including Pakatan Harapan supporters - if you feel in the past 90 days, Harapan could not honour many promises, I hope you can support us to check and balance the government.
“The by-election result would not make any change on Selangor's political landscape. The opposition has five seats, less than 10 percent of the total 56 seats while the government has 51 seats.”
Asked on whether MCA would set any target for the Balakong by-election, Wee (photo above) replied in the negative, saying the party will only work hard towards winning the heart and mind of the voters.
However, the Ayer Hitam MP admitted that Balakong is a difficult battle for MCA as the party could not hold the contesting deposit by gaining merely 10.5 percent of the votes. A candidate must obtain at least 12.5 percent votes to retain the deposit.
Pressed on whether MCA will set a target to retain the deposit, Wee said the target is too low for them.
“That target as you mentioned, maybe it's too low for us. Because you need to get 12.5 percent of vote to get it. In the last general election, we obtained 10.5 percent only. Hopefully, with the help of others and support from both sides of the political divide, we are able to improve as compared to the last general election.
“We will not set any specific target. Of course, if possible, we want to win. However, we have to be pragmatic, with more than 35,000 in majority achieved by the late Eddie Ng, I don't think anyone with the right frame of mind will think we can win, because it's a big gap.”
Also present at the press conference were MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun, youth chief Chong Sin Woon, Serdang division chief Liew Yuen Keong and deputy chief Hoh Hee Lee.
The Balakong state seat fell vacant after two-term incumbent Eddie Ng from DAP died in an accident on July 20.
Nomination day falls on Aug 18.  - Mkini
