PKR fields ex-MBPJ councillor for Seri Setia polls

SERI SETIA POLLS | PKR is fielding former Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillor Halimey Abu Bakar as its candidate for the Seri Setia by-election on Sept 8.
PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail made the announcement at the launch of PKR's machinery at Desa Mentari in Petaling Jaya tonight.
Wan Azizah, who is also the deputy prime minister, said the choice of Halimey, who is a local, would help PKR retain the seat.
"We submitted names to the (PKR) leadership and there was deliberation. I managed to speak to  Anwar Ibrahim and I feel the leadership has the wisdom in choosing a local who has influence in the constituency for the seat.
"Thus, I announce Halimey as our pick. And this time, we will contest under (Pakatan) Harapan's logo. I urge all to vote for Harapan again," she said.
Halimey will square off with PAS' Dr Halimah Ali come Sept 8.
Some 52,650 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the by-election brought about by the passing of incumbent Shaharuddin Badaruddin on Aug 2.
Shaharuddin won the seat in the recent 14th general election with a majority of 19,372 votes defeating BN candidate Yusoff M Haniff; Mohd Ghazali Daud of PAS and independent candidate S Vigneswaran.
Speaking to reporters later, Halimey said he is confident of retaining the seat won by PKR in GE14.
This is based on strong grassroots support for Harapan and its other component parties, said the 46-year-old.
"My aim is to continue doing what we have done so far and I want to improve things in the Lembah Subang area especially the area where the low-cost housing projects are.
"Besides that, we will also improve the areas with flats in Seri Setia," he said.
Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, Minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources Xavier Jayakumar and Sungai Kandis assemblyperson Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
BN is not fielding a candidate for Seri Setia to pave the way for PAS with PAS returning the favour to BN in Balakong which goes to the polls on the same day due to the death of its assemblyperson Eddie Ng in an accident on July 20.  -Mkini
