Senior cops to undergo English course

Senior police officers, including district police chiefs, will be required to attend English courses following an instruction by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to enhance their English proficiency.
Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said initially, 30 senior police officers across Peninsular Malaysia, have been selected to undergo the five-day course at the Royal Malaysia Police College in Kuala Lumpur.
"In June 2018, the prime minister has made it clear that in shaping the New Malaysia, and in order to be able to communicate and negotiate capably with the outside world, all senior government officers will undergo English competency tests to help bring the civil service to a greater new height," Fuzi said during the opening ceremony of the "Professional Communication Course" at the college today.
In a press conference later, Fuzi said Mahathir has also instructed and encouraged police officers to speak English during police briefings.
According to him, the course will be expanded to 14 police-relat
ed establishments nationwide, adding that English proficiency among police officers is crucial in creating a truly world class police organisation.Fuzi said the standard of English among police officers in the country were currently at a moderate level, and acknowledged there's room for improvement.

Meanwhile, on another matter, Fuzi said that he will personally join raids on gambling joints, if need be, to show the police's serious efforts to combat the perpetual problem.
Fuzi noted several district police chiefs have been transferred out due to their failure to curb illegal gambling in their respective districts, but refused to disclose the number and names of those involved.
