Sungai Kandis assemblyperson Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni today lamented apparent efforts to make Malay-Muslims in the country "stupid."
"(In the past), the most tragic 'project' to make Malays stupid is when they were fooled that if party XYZ (Umno) was no more, then the Malays were done for.
"But now, people are saying that we (Malays) will be done for when a non-Muslim becomes chief justice or attorney-general – this is the later 'project', which is just rhetoric to frighten the Malays," he said.
Zawawi was speaking at a forum in Petaling Jaya on Malay-Muslim polemics in the 'new Malaysia'.
He said such "projects" were why many Malays, especially those in rural areas, are perpetually gripped with fear of change.
"So all these makcik in the kampungs will be so frightful, that if that party was no longer around, they'd have to eat tapioca.
"This is the project to dumb down the Malays, to the point that if a ceramah speaker says cows can fly they'd believe it, because they can't tell right from wrong," he added.
However, the PKR assemblyperson said that such fears were unfounded.
On the appointments of non-Muslims as chief justice and attorney-general, Zawawi said the practice was not unusual, and was even a feature of the Ottoman empire.
He also stressed that Malays need to place their faith in the Federal Constitution, which enshrines Islam as the official religion of the country.
Aside from Zawawi, Bersatu youth exco Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir also spoke at the forum. - Mkini
