Syed Saddiq vows to defend anti-LGBT doctor's freedom of speech

Action should not be taken against a doctor for penning an open letter critical of the LGBT community, said Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.
"If there is any action against the medical officer, I will voice out and stand against it.
"But to date, I have been informed there has not been any disciplinary action; there was only a complaint," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
In a Facebook posting on Aug 6, which was later deleted, Dr Nur Ilyani Mohamed Nawawi had aimed her remarks at social activist Marina Mahathir.
Among others, the doctor said she disapproved of free sex, let alone “deviant lifestyles”.
This had prompted the Health Ministry to issue a statement stressing it did not discriminate against the LGBT when it came to providing healthcare.
Syed Saddiq, who is also Bersatu Youth chief, said Ilyani had the right to voice her opinion.
"To me, anyone has the right to air their views. If we agree, then we agree. But if we disagree, we can agree to disagree.
"I don't agree with taking disciplinary action against her (for airing her views).
"She has her right to air her views and that is a personal view. If we take action against her, it would mean that we are restricting her voice and view," he said.
Syed Saddiq had previously tried to recruit LGBT activist Numan Afifi Saadan as his press officer.
However, the appointment did not go through following pressure from conservative groups. - Mkini
