KJ, Johari deny leaving Umno

Khairy Jamaluddin says he will remain in the party, saying that there was a need for a credible opposition.

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairy Jamaluddin and Johari Abdul Ghani today denied they will leave Umno in the wake of the exit of two leaders from the party in the last 48 hours.
Khairy, who is the former Umno Youth chief, insisted that he will remain with the party, saying that there was a need for a credible opposition.
“The rakyat wants to see the Barisan Nasional in that role.
“Plus, if I had left Umno, I wouldn’t be here,” he told reporters after attending the party’s closed-door meeting here at PWTC.

Former finance minister II Johari Abdul Ghani.

Johari has also rubbished claims he was quitting Umno following the resignation of two of the party’s senior leaders, Mustapa Mohamed and Anifah Aman.
“I wish to state that I will continue to serve Umno as the Federal Territories Umno chief and Barisan Nasional FT chief as long as my services are needed by the Umno leadership,” Johari said in a statement.
The former finance minister II said he was dedicated to being part of the reforms that the party needs to undertake to remain relevant.
He added that with the right leaders, the 72-year-old party would be successful in regaining the people’s trust.
Yesterday, Mustapa quit Umno saying its direction was not in line with his principles, while Anifah, the former foreign minister, resigned from all party posts and left the party, citing BN’s failure to restore East Malaysia’s rights under Malaysia Agreement 1963.
Earlier, it was reported that a list claiming that 17 Umno MPs will quit the party was making the rounds following the resignation of Mustapa and Anifah.
The majority of MPs listed are former ministers or Umno Supreme Council members while others are ordinary members who won in the May 9 general election.
Mustapa and Anifah were also on the list. - FMT
