Malaysian activist barred from entering Vietnam for WEF meet

International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) secretary-general Debbie Stothard (above) who was deported from Vietnam this morning, said she has requested the Malaysian ambassador there to seek a reversal of her ban.
“I have requested the Malaysian ambassador to seek a reversal of the ban so I can speak at a panel meeting on Thursday as planned,” she told Malaysiakini today.
She was referring to the “Innovation Under Stress” panel meet at the World Economic Forum being held in Vietnam this year at which she is scheduled to speak.
Stothard, who is a Malaysian dealing with Myanmar issues, was detained by immigration officers yesterday upon her arrival at the Hanoi International Airport under “suspension of entry”.
She was sent back to Kuala Lumpur on an 8.55am flight today.
She said the Malaysian ambassador and his aide were allowed to visit her after she was detained for five minutes last night.
“As they were leaving, the official escorting them told me, ‘Next time maybe we will let you come but only as a tourist',” she said.
Another speaker for the same panel meet, Amnesty International global operations senior director Minar Pimple, was also barred from entering Vietnam, according to Stothard. - Mkini
