Court to deliver verdict on Bekir's RM30m mutaah appeal tomorrow

The Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court of Appeal is set to deliver its verdict tomorrow on Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib's appeal against an order to pay his ex-wife Shahnaz A Majid RM30 million in mutaah (gift following divorce).
The three-member bench is also expected to deliver a decision on Shahnaz's cross-appeal over the quantum awarded to her. She is seeking to increase the quantum of the mutaah to RM100 million.
In 2016, Bekir, the son of Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud, was ordered to pay the RM30 million sum – the largest known payout for a mutaah case – by the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court.
Judge Mohamad Abdul Karim Wahab said that the payments should be made via three instalments of RM10 million each.
Later that month, however, Bekir was given a stay on the order.
Bekir and Shahnaz (photo) were married on Jan 9, 1992, but had lived separately since 1999. They were officially divorced on May 11, 2011. They have a 25-year-old son.
In the Syariah High Court ruling, Abdul Karim had described Shahnaz's claim of RM100 million as outrageous.
The judge added that the court based the RM30 million figure on Bekir's affordability and his credit card expenses, which approached RM1 million a month.
He also criticised Bekir's abandonment of Shahnaz, the elder sister of jazz queen Sheila Majid, for 10 years.
“This abandonment (pengabaian) can't be treated lightly (enteng). Her opportunities to lead a new life were hampered as she was left gantung tak bertali (abandoned) for 10 years,” he said.
“This abandonment led to her living her life alone for a long time (kesunyian hidup masa panjang) when she was still the lawful wife,” the judge said at the time.
Bekir is being represented by lawyers Saadiah Din and Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar today, and Shahnaz by Rafie Mohd Shafie and Akberdin Abdul Kader. - Mkini
