PETALING JAYA: Malaysia plans to strengthen its education system by placing more emphasis on “humanistic and values-driven education”, with values like love, happiness and mutual respect at its core, says Education Minister Maszlee Malik.
He said his ministry wanted to create a “fun, safe and positive learning environment” where the social and emotional well-being of students is prioritised.
However, he acknowledged that it would be difficult to move from the current exam-based and growth-oriented system.
“It requires a massive cultural change and mindset shift. Not just with our teachers, but also with parents, employers and the larger society.
“But I strongly believe that we will not do our children justice if we continue to expect them to survive in a world that they are not socially and emotionally prepared to be in,” he said in his speech at the Education World Forum in London last night.
Maszlee said efforts to build a values-driven education system included working with others outside the system as such a responsibility could not be shouldered by schools and teachers alone.
He said this was why his ministry was also working with parents and NGOs.
“Parents, especially, are vital to this and we are accelerating efforts to deepen the involvement of parents in the education of their children.
“Currently, more than 90% of all Malaysian schools have parents involved in a majority of school events. We plan to make these contact points more meaningful.” - FMT
