EC will take appropriate action against Manogaran, says chairman

PH candidate M Manogaran was escorted out of the polling station for wearing a shirt with the party’s logo.
PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) today said it would take “appropriate action” against defeated Pakatan Harapan candidate M Manogaran for alleged violation of election rules by wearing a shirt with the party logo at a polling station in Cameron Highlands.
EC chairman Azhar Harun said he had directed the secretariat and the legal department to gather all facts.
Asked if the EC would lodge a police report against Manogaran, he said the EC would consider appropriate action.
“Of course, we will take the appropriate action for all offences that we have knowledge of,” he told FMT.
Azhar was responding to a call by electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 to lodge a police report against Manogaran.
The NGO also wanted the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers to act.
Manogaran was ordered to leave the polling station at Sekolah Kebangsaan Senderut in Kuala Lipis after he was spotted in party attire by EC officers.
He has since apologised, saying he did not realise he was still wearing a party shirt he had been using during the two-week campaign for the by-election.
Wearing anything with a party logo within 50m of a polling station is an offence under Section 26(1)(g) of the Elections Act.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional candidate Ramli Mohd Nor won the by-election by obtaining 12,038 votes, defeating Manogaran (8,800 votes) and independent candidates Sallehudin Ab Talib (314) and Wong Seng Yee (276). - FMT
