CONSTRUCTION of a semi-detached house resembling a place of worship in Taman Merak Mas, Durian Tunggal, Melaka has drawn much criticism.
The house depicts Taoist motifs and architecture.
Durian Tunggal assemblyman Mohd Sofi Abd Wahab said the issue was brought to his attention and details on the construction has been forwarded to state Housing, Local Government and Environment committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew.
Mohd Sofi said the construction of the house started before Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG) issued a letter on Dec 12 last year stating that the premises should not resemble a temple.
“MPAG should explain to the owner about the Uniform Building by-law 1984 which says it is forbidden to have a structure that resembles a place of worship in a housing area.
“We hope to resolve this matter amicably to preserve the harmony in Melaka that we are accustomed to,” said Mohd Sofi.
He added that the premises had been abandoned.
“MPAG has not stopped the construction but it notified the owner to change the design of the building.
“I am confident this issue can be resolved soon with the cooperation of the building owner,” he said.- Star
