PEKAN: Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang has been officially declared the sultan of Pahang, following an elaborate ceremony at Istana Abu Bakar here.
He will now take the name Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
“I truly and rightfully acknowledge and pledge loyalty in administrating with fairness and trust the state of Pahang and all the territories under its jurisdiction in accordance with the laws of the state of Pahang that have been and will be promulgated from time to time,” Sultan Abdullah, who was attired in a yellow baju Melayu, said in his oath.
His ascent to the state throne comes less than two weeks ahead of a meeting by the Conference of Rulers to decide on the next Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, following the resignation of Sultan Muhammad V on Jan 4.
The Pahang royal council had earlier decided that Sultan Abdullah, who has been a crown prince for more than four decades, would replace his father Sultan Ahmad Shah who has taken ill.
Under a unique system of rotating the nine Malay rulers every five years, the Pahang ruler is next in line to become the Agong.
Sultan Abdullah was born at Istana Mangga Tunggal here on July 30, 1959.
He attended preschool at the Clifford School, Kuala Lipis, in 1965. He then continued his primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ahmad in Pekan and Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan St Thomas in Kuantan (1966-1969) and his secondary education at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan St Thomas (1970-1974).
He went to the UK to further his studies at Aldenham School, Elstree, Hertfordshire and Davies College, London, from 1975 to 1977.
He also attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK (1978-1979) as well as Worcester College and Queen Elizabeth College, also in the UK (1980-1981) and gained a Diploma in International Relations and Diplomacy. - FMT
