Bayan Lepas assemblyperson Azrul Mahathir Aziz has expressed sadness over the incident where a man was caught slapping and threatening a female shop assistant over a few packets of cooking oil.
The 18-second video clip went viral on social media and angered netizens have been calling for police action.
Azrul told Malaysiakini that the incident is not an issue involving race, but humanity and people's attitude towards one another.
"I hope the suspect, a male, would be arrested and charged by the police soon although he remains at large," the first-term assemblyperson said when contacted about the matter.
Yesterday, Southwest police chief A Anbalagan said the suspect is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for threatening and causing injuries to the 29-year-old victim.
The incident, which took place at Ria Mart Setia Triangle, Bayan Lepas, Penang on Tuesday morning was recorded on the mini market's CCTV.
The suspect was apparently upset when told by the shop assistant that he could only purchase two packets of cooking oil as the supply was limited.
Unable to purchase the three packets he wanted, the suspect slapped and threatened the victim, saying "watch out" before he left the mini market.
Azrul said in this era of modernisation, humanity should not deteriorate with time.
"Respect towards each other and good attitude must be preserved so that harmony among members of the community can be upheld," he added.
Azrul hoped this incident would not be turned into a racial issue.
He urged the various communities, regardless of race or social status, to use this episode as a lesson so that such behaviour would not be repeated in the future. - Mkini
