Stop the intimidation, Bersih tells cops after duo summoned

Bersih has called on police to stop intimidating activists after cops summoned for questioning two of its members over a memorandum submitted to the Election Commission in April last year.
"Two Bersih activists, former chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari (above) and member Chan Tsu Chong, who submitted the memorandum, were recently called in to be investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
"It makes no sense that police would investigate them just for handing over a memorandum," Bersih said in a statement today.
Malaysiakini understands Shahrul Aman and Chan were contacted by the police yesterday, although it is not clear when the police asked them to come in.
The duo had submitted a memorandum to the EC on April 24, 2018, to complain about the integrity of the electoral roll.
Bersih called on police to review their standard operating procedures so as to not prevent activists from speaking out.
The elections watchdog group also called on the Pakatan Harapan federal government to abolish the Peaceful Assembly Act so that it couldn't be used to stifle the voices of activists. - Mkini
