15 applications for underage marriages in Kelantan last year

Syariah High Court judge Abu Bakar Abdullah Kutty says underage marriages must be prevented because they will result in countless problems for the couples.

KOTA BHARU: The Shariah courts in Kelantan received 15 applications for underage marriages from January 2018 to last month.

Kelantan Syariah High Court judge Abu Bakar Abdullah Kutty said of the 15, only 10 were approved.

In Kelantan, the minimum age for marriage is 16 for Muslim girls.

“Although the number may appear small, underage marriages must be prevented from early on because it is feared the couples will face countless problems,” he told reporters after taking part in a forum on underage marriages at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Kubang Kerian here today. - FMT
