The government has moved a motion to suspend the BN’s Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak for three months for contempt of Parliament.
Najib has been accused of breaking the embargo and publishing part of the content of the Felda White Paper on his Facebook page.
The motion is listed as item Number One in the Standing Order for the Dewan Rakyat’s sitting today.
A minister in the Prime Minister’s Department is expected to table the motion.
On the evening of April 9, Najib published a statement with a partial content of the White Paper. The House only lifted the embargo on the Felda document at 11.30am on April 10, states the motion to suspend Najib.
The House, therefore, found that Najib was in contempt of Parliament, it says.
“The action of the honourable Pekan (MP) has clearly violated Clause 95A of the Standing Order of Dewan Rakyat.
“As such, it is agreed that the honourable Pekan (MP) must be suspended from his duty as Member of Parliament for three months,” added the motion.
The White Paper – titled “Towards a Sustainable Felda” – was given to lawmakers on April 9 and slated to be debated on the next day, Wednesday, April 10.
An embargo note was labelled on the front cover of the document to remind the lawmakers not to release its content earlier than that date.
On Tuesday, Najib uploaded a snapshot of the White Paper and revealed that a “put option” was included in the Felda’s purchase of a 37 percent stake in Indonesia’s Eagle High Plantation.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad pledged action against his predecessor.
Several MPs expect the motion to suspend Najib will be passed in the Dewan Rakyat with a simple majority today as Pakatan Harapan and its allies Warisan and Upko control 139 of the 222 parliamentary seats.
