Low Taek Jho, who is wanted in connection with the 1MDB scandal, is residing in China and travelling around, according to a news report last week.
However, Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian claims to be clueless about the fugitive financier's whereabouts.
“I don't know if Low is in China,” he told reporters during an interview in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Describing this as an "old question that has been posed numerous times," Bai said Malaysia had asked for Beijing's assistance to locate Low, but that authorities there were unable to locate him.
Last week, Sin Chew Daily reported that Low had travelled to Hainan, Macau, Shanghai and Shenzen.
Bai insisted that Chinese authorities had conducted a thorough search for Low upon Putrajaya's request, and according to the information it provided.
However, the ambassador assured that Beijing would continue to lend its assistance to track Low down should new evidence surface on the latter’s whereabouts.
"The Chinese will still assist Malaysia in the case, and are ready to work with the Malaysian side if new information is provided.
"But there have been no (new) findings so far. But if Malaysia provides new information, Chinese police will search (for Low) again," he said. - Mkini
