I told Streram to breach police barricade in GE14, says Rafizi

PKR’s Rafizi Ramli speaks at a ceramah in Rantau last night.
SEREMBAN: Rafizi Ramli last night admitted that he had instructed Dr Streram Sinnasamy to push through the police barricade after the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate was refused entry to the nomination centre in the May 9 polls.
The PKR vice-president said Streram had called him on the morning of April 28 last year to inform him that he was not allowed to enter the nomination centre.
He said Streram claimed the Election Commission (EC) had not issued him a pass.
Rafizi, the former Pandan MP, said he told Streram to try again, only to receive a call half an hour later telling him that he was still barred.
“So I told him, ‘I know you’re a doctor, but today you must fight. You must rempuh (push through) the police. You must do whatever it takes to get in,” he said in his first speech at a ceramah since last year’s general election.
Rantau candidate Dr Streram Sinnasamy was barred from entering the nomination centre for the general election last year.
“So that’s why he ran into the police (barricade), and he was arrested and handcuffed. It was the first time he was handcuffed,” he told a crowd of over 500 in Rantau here.
Rafizi said videos and pictures of Streram’s arrest showed how tyrannical the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration was, and that it was prepared to use the police to stop people from contesting.
“And it woke Malaysians up.”
The EC’s decision to bar Streram from the nomination centre saw BN candidate Mohamad Hasan win the state seat unopposed in the general election.
The Election Court declared Mohamad’s victory null and void following an appeal by PH, a ruling upheld by the Federal Court which dismissed the appeal filed by Mohamad.
Streram will face Mohamad again, as well as independents Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor Yassin in the by-election on Saturday. - FMT
