The Ministry of Transport has yet to receive any request to rename the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), said its minister Anthony Loke.
"I have not received any official request from the Selangor government. It will remain as KLIA," he said, when asked to comment on the matter by reporters met at Senai International Airport in Johor today.
This followed the leak of a letter (below) dated Oct 18 last year, which says a Selangor exco meeting had agreed to a suggestion to change the name of the airport to Sepang International Airport to reflect the locality as practised by other airports abroad.
The suggestion was brought up by the Selangor Investment, Industry & Commerce, Small and Medium Entreprises (SME) and Transportation Committee chairperson Teng Chang Kim.
The letter further states that the Selangor Local Government, Public Transport and New Village Development Committee chairperson Ng Sze Han had agreed to bring the suggestion to a National Transport Council meeting.
The copies of the purported letter had been circulated on social media platforms.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Ng confirmed the veracity of the letter saying that it is the minutes of a meeting.
However, he said no decision had been made.
"It was mentioned during the state government council meeting, but so far nothing has been decided," Ng told Malaysiakini.
He further explained that the names of popular International airports in other countries reflect their locality.
Ng cited Narita and Haneda airports in Tokyo, Japan; Incheon in Seoul, South Korea; Suvarnabhuni in Bangkok, Thailand; Baiyun in GuangZhou, Pudong in Shanghai, China; and Schiphol in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. - Mkini
