Sarawak to nominate songket keringkam for Unesco recognition

KUCHING: The Sarawak government welcomes the National Heritage Department's bid to nominate the state's songket keringkam for recognition on Unesco's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said songket keringkam was part of Sarawak's heritage which had been handed down over generations.
Keringkam is the traditional embroidery of Sarawak Malays, usually done in gold or silver thread to produce the state's distinctive songket.
"Songket keringkam has the potential to be accorded world recognition because of its artistic and cultural values," he said during a courtesy call by the department at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Monday (Apr 22).
The meeting was aimed at getting the state government's input on the proposed nomination, an initiative by the department with the help of the Malaysia Arts and Culture Association, Kuching (Persatuan Penggiat Seni dan Kebudayaan Malaysia, Kuching).
Abang Johari said the state government was committed to assist Sarawak's songket keringkam industry, including providing funds for its development and promotion both locally and abroad.
He said training and skills development would be provided to local craftsmen as well as young Sarawakians interested in taking it up.
The Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs), Old Kuching Smart Heritage, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and Tun Abdul Razak Teacher Education Institute will work together to provide the training.
Technical training programmes on songket weaving and keringkam embroidery will also be held at Centexs and other weaving centres.- Star
