Najib Abdul Razak has claimed that the Pakatan Harapan government has approved a budget to train more cybertroopers following the ruling coalition’s third consecutive by-election defeat in Rantau last week.
However, a Harapan source told Malaysiakini this is not true.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source claimed it was the former premier who is bankrolling a team to manage his social media accounts.
The source said this is the reason that postings are uploaded on his Facebook and Twitter accounts even when Najib is sitting in the dock for his ongoing trial.
In a Facebook posting this morning, Najib, who quoted a source, claimed that Harapan decided to beef up its online army as it considered the situation to be critical.
“According to sources, mine is among the FB pages to be attacked by this ’10k squad’… The FB pages of their leaders do not have traction.
“However, I am certain the people would not be duped again,” he added.
Dismissing this claim, the Harapan source claimed that Najib is “building a perception shield” as interest in his trial begins to grow.
“Since his case has gone to trial, it has become a hot topic among netizens who want to know more about the scandal.
“So Najib is creating this perception (of Harapan cybertroopers) to deflect the criticism from genuine social media accounts belonging to Malaysians.
“Whoever criticises him (on social media) will be branded as a paid Harapan cybertrooper,” added the source.
Najib is on trial for seven money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power charges related to SRC International to the tune of RM42 million.
The former is also facing another three money laundering charges related to SRC International, amounting to RM47 million, which would be heard at a later date.
SRC is a former 1MDB subsidiary.
