KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran says the government is considering establishing a standalone act to govern domestic workers in the country.
Speaking in a question-and-answer session after his speech at the 1st National Conference on Anti-Trafficking in Persons here today, he said the government is discussing the matter with the relevant stakeholders.
“We are just at the initial stages, so we can have a special act to govern domestic workers,” he added.
He said a standalone act could help protect domestic workers by ensuring proper working hours, holidays, salaries as well as insurance.
However, he added that such legislation could take a long time to table.
For now, he said, his ministry is also looking at adding more regulations to the Employment Act to ensure that domestic workers are granted adequate protection while working in the country.
During his speech earlier, he said his ministry had suggested conducting an audit report on employers who apply to hire foreign workers. He said this would be called the Social Compliance Audit Report.
“We are in the last stages,” he added. “We have already submitted this proposal to the Cabinet, and the Cabinet has formed a sub-committee headed by the chief secretary of the government to study the feasibility of enforcing this.”
He said this would help address setbacks in the recruitment of foreign workers. - FMT
