Cops probing MACC deputy director’s claim

MACC deputy director Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin has denied that he forced an immigration officer to plead guilty to several corruption charges.

PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating a report lodged by a deputy Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director who has denied forcing an immigration officer to plead guilty to several corruption charges.

Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, who is also a deputy public prosecutor with the Putrajaya MACC office, said last month he had filed the report after coming across the allegation made in the whistleblower Edisi Khas Twitter account.

In the initial police report lodged by the immigration officer, which was also posted on Edisi Khas, he said he claimed trial to three charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code, relating to a public servant misusing his position for personal gain.

The officer said he was charged in the Kota Bharu sessions court.

Kota Bharu acting police chief Mohd Suhaimi Ali told FMT that police had recorded statements from several witnesses in relation to the report lodged by Wan Shaharuddin.

“All I can say is the matter is still under investigation. At the same time, we are waiting for a report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission,” he said.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1988.

Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code refers to statements that lead to public alarm and distress, while Section 233 of the CMA 1998 refers to improper use of network facilities or network service. - FMT
