PETALING JAYA: E-wallet payments are now accepted for transactions in all federal ministries and their departments, according to a Treasury circular.

The notice, issued on Jan 21, says e-wallets will be accepted for transactions over the counter and online at all federal ministries and departments. However, federal statutory bodies and state governments can choose to opt out.

Service charges will be borne by the government except for non-revenue receipts such as loan repayments, which will be borne by the payer.

The circular also states that the e-wallet service provider can only charge up to 0.5% of the transaction value for its service charge.

Consumer associations have welcomed the government’s initiative but called for options to be provided for those who wish to pay manually.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations chief executive Saravanan Thambirajah said many people had started to use e-wallets and were getting familiar with the method.

Malaysia Consumers Movement president Darshan Singh Dhillon said the government must ensure that personal data of users is protected and not abused in any way.

All transaction complaints, such as refunds or illegal transactions, must be attended to swiftly by the government or relevant departments, he said. - FMT
