Floods: Danger lurks in Taman Sri Muda as several Klang Valley areas inundated

The water level at Sungai Klang in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam has risen above the flood danger level as of 5pm today, while several areas in the Klang Valley are already inundated with flash floods, after a continuous downpour in the area this evening.

This is the third round of flash floods to strike the Klang Valley within six months, with the first one taking place last December and the second one in March this year.

According to the river water level data website operated by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage under the Environment and Water Ministry, as of 5pm, the water level at Sungai Klang in Taman Sri Muda has risen to 5.04m, with the danger threshold being 5m.

Based on a video recorded by state exco V Ganabatirau, all the water pumps at the Sri Muda sluice were working normally and the monsoon drain was at 80 percent capacity at around 5pm.

Among the other places already affected by floods are parts of Kuala Lumpur city centre, including from Jalan Ipoh to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Imbi towards Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ipoh/Jalan Rahmat, Jalan Sultan Ismail/Ampang and Jalan Kampar off Jalan Sentul, according to the Selangor Journal.

Other locations affected are Bulatan Dato, Kampung Perik, Jalan Duta Mas, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Dang Wangi.

Flood in Sekinchan, Selangor

Meanwhile, within Selangor, among the affected areas are Sekinchan and Puchong.

Several parts of Johor Bahru have also been hit with flash floods today, prompting the police to close some roads for public safety.

As reported by The Star Online, affected roads in Johor Bahru include Jalan Tebrau, Jalan Serampang and Jalan Tun Abdul Razak.

However, the floods in Johor Bahru subsided quickly when the rain stopped at around 4pm.

The Meteorological Department has also released an update this afternoon that rain is expected to continue until 7pm tonight in some areas in Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

DBKL all prepared

In a press conference later, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said they have prepared for the heavy rain today thanks to the Meteorological Department’s weather forecast.

“We acted proactively and DBKL officers have been on standby at hotspot locations with our machinery,” said DBKL socioeconomic development executive director Anwar Mohd Zain.

The rain started around 10am and flash floods struck within an hour at Jalan Rahmat, Jalan Ipoh Batu 3, Jalan Segambut, Jalan Dutamas 2, Sultan Iskandar highway exit to Jalan Kuching and Jalan Ampang in front of the Bukit Nanas waterfall.

Anwar said the floodwater subsided within 30 minutes in most of these areas.

These locations experienced flash floods due to some of them being lower than river water level or there was sediment in the nearby drains.

DBKL has sent 10 water pumps to areas such as Jalan Dutamas 2, Sultan Iskandar highway exit to Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ipoh Batu 3 and Jalan Segambut.

They have also placed sandbags at several locations such as Sungai Bras-Bras, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Rahmat and Lebuh Ampang.

A total of 300 DBKL officers were involved in these operations, with the cooperation of Alam Flora, the police force and the Civil Defence Force. - Mkini
