KAPIT: A 66km-long new road will be constructed as an alternative route connecting Sibu division with Kapit division, federal works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi announced today.

The construction will be carried out in three phases from the Nanga Kabah area to the opposite side of Kapit town. A bridge will be built across the Rajang river between the Song and Kapit towns to connect the new road with the existing Song-Kapit road.

“This new road will provide access to residents along Rajang river who were affected after express boat operations ceased following the completion of the Sibu-Kapit road in October 2021,” Nanta said after launching the first phase of the project today.

Phase 1 spans 16km from the intersection near the Kabah river area (in Kanowit) to Rumah Bukit (Song) and will cost nearly RM146 million.

The government had approved initial funding for a major bridge across the Rajang river, said Nanta, who is MP for Kapit. To complete this development, the Sarawak government will construct roads connecting the Hulu Katibas, Hulu Baleh, Pelagus and Bukit Goram areas. - FMT
