ARAU: A 37-year-old canteen worker has been arrested by the police yesterday for allegedly hitting and hurting her daughter in front of a supermarket in Jejawi here.
The suspect was arrested in Mata Ayer after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showing her hitting her daughter, causing her to fall and bleed when her face struck the sharp corner of a nearby bench, went viral on social media.
District police chief Superintendent Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi confirmed to have received a report, which was lodged by a member of the public, on the woman's actions that were recorded by a CCTV camera near the supermarket.
"In the clip, the suspect is seen hitting the back of a young girl's head, causing her to hit the sharp corner of a bench and bleed.
"The incident is believed to have occurred in front of a supermarket corridor in Jejawi, Arau, and the suspect will be brought to court for remand to assist in the investigation," he said in a statement.
He added that the victim, a four-year-old girl, sustained a wound on her right eyebrow and has received follow-up treatment after the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
