DAP Youth has again clashed with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, further highlighting their uneasy alliance with the Madani government.
The latest dispute stems from the Merlimau assemblyperson’s sharp criticism of DAP MP Chow Yu Hui’s proposal to establish a federal minister for non-Islamic affairs.
“When elected representatives are ignorant of the functions of the government, the constitution, and the sensitivities that must be respected, this is the kind of utterly foolish representative we end up with.
“If such an idea is supported, and those who oppose it are accused of being opposition supporters, then my response to you is: it would be better for you to just die!” Akmal (above) said in a social media post.
Despite addressing Akmal as "bro", it was clear that DAP Youth publicity secretary and Tanah Rata assemblyperson Ho Chi Yang harboured no brotherly affection in his retort, in which he called out the Umno Youth chief’s “foolishness”.

“Bro, take it easy first. Yes, Islam is the religion of the federation, and no political party has ever disputed that.
“Maybe the representative who tells others to just go die is also seen as a fool (bangang) in the eyes of others. Don't just twist words cleverly - it comes off as disrespectful,” he said.
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that two DAP Youth lawyers, Lim Chun Weng and Jason Ng, had cautioned all parties against falling into what they described as Akmal and Perikatan Nasional’s “political trap” regarding the proposal.
“We strongly condemn the attempts by opposition parties and certain Umno leaders, such as Akmal, to frame this proposal as a challenge to Islam’s status as the official religion of the Federation, merely for cheap political publicity,” they said.
Lim, the DAP Youth secretary, and Ng, the wing’s public policies bureau head and Astaka assemblyperson, stated that after reviewing the proposal, they found no evidence that it undermines the position of Islam.
Citing Malaysia’s demographics, the duo urged for the proposal to be discussed in a rational and constructive manner. - Mkini
